According to Tweet Binder and Monica Montero @camonmon yours truly was the Bonze medallist for Most Active Twitter User at Marketing Week Live #MWLive2013
Originally I had planned to attend Marketing Week Live on the Wednesday but my doubles partner, Ian Inman, called Monday to say he’d broke his arm playing football at the weekend!
Opening the door for me to connect with a pal who I knew was attending today… but then family commitments around sport and Australian family over for a few weeks gave me limited options. With a planned trip to London on Friday, enough travel already, what are the options?
I know, I thought last night, I’ll spend the whole day on the event website, listening to tweets, watching live streaming and engaging with folk in a virtual way… brilliant… set some targets and away we go.
Mentally I figured I could review 30 companies and then, when I had looked through the list of categories, I chose 7, giving me 54 to review, I knew the pressure was on but hey, let’s see where we get to.
I loved reviewing the “brand story telling” and connected with a bunch of the people involved with the 8 companies mentioned and wrote a review… but I did get lost in the info and it took me close to 3 hours to put the first story together! That wouldn’t do for the rest of the day but hey, I enjoyed the process…
I tweeted a few folk and re-tweeted information that I thought relevant, asking questions of the organisers… like why is the live streaming not that live?
After the fun of the brand story telling I went to search out the “community” companies, thinking they would be platforms for social engagement… nope, they were all market research companies and it made me feel a tad grumpy!
I hate being corralled into things and market research always feels like it’s about finding out the hidden triggers, keeping them your best kept secret and then corralling the innocent into an area so their wallets can be cleaned out… that physiology rubs me right up the wrong way… don’t take me for a sucker, sucker!
Went off to have some lunch as I was feeling a little light headed after the mornings fun and the downer I was on as a result of the communities not being what I was after.
After beans on Rivita, came back to my shed and reviewed the “Education & Training”, which failed to inspire me… “Lead Generation” was better but not WOW, couple of solutions worthy of note, one of which I bumped into at Excel a couple of week’s back and will be trying out to see if it gives me the data I am looking for… and are not simply offering false promise as so many social media solutions seem to…
“Media owners” are rallying the student world and getting us all great data from students who will do anything for two pints of larger and a packet of crisps
“Motivation”… light touch… buy some vouchers, get your people a food hamper or a new bike…
Intrinsic motivation is what makes people do what they do well… which means to get the best out of folk, work with those that love doing what they do… simple as that, some might not need that much food
4:30PM and just the “social media” group of 14 to get through… flew through them, spotted an old favourite and a new kid on the block that I’ll explore… made the necessary connections via LinkedIn and back to follow the #MWLive2013 to see what was going on…
In summary of my category Media Week Live 2013 engagement:
Brand Storytelling (8) Loved it

Education / Training (4) didn’t do it for me

Must have been that winning tweet to @JC7777, Justin Cooke, CMO at Topshop… which he favourited
Interesting day engaging remotely… I do prefer real time engagement but you have to try other ways so you can appraise them for yourself… don’t assume what works for corporate will work for SME, they are different worlds.
Were you at Marketing Week Live 2013, what did you think and what is the next EXPO you are going to?
